Leather for Armor: Tooling, Dye & Fit

Pick the weight, not the animal

Leather thickness runs in "ounces" (1 oz โ‰ˆ 3.3 mm.. roughly 4 oz โ‰ˆ 1.6โ€“2 mm). For costume armor: 4โ€“5 oz bracers and belts (toolable, wearable), 6โ€“8 oz heavy pauldrons and armor plates that hold shape alone. Vegetable-tanned (veg-tan) tooling leather is the one that takes stamping and molding, finished or garment leathers won't take a tool mark.

Case it, then tool it

  1. Casing: wet the surface evenly with a sponge, it turns cool and dark; that's the working state.
  2. Cut the pattern with a sharp knife in one confident pass; skive (thin) edges that will fold.
  3. Tooling: swivel knife for lines, stamps for texture, a mallet light enough that the table doesn't bounce. Tooling dries hard, mistakes are forever, which is why casing matters.
  4. Mold 3D shapes while damp (over a form or a sand-filled bag) and let it dry there, the shape stays.

Dye, edge, finish

Straps that carry a whole costume

Armor hangs from four points: shoulders and hips. Measure the wearer IN the under-layer, add 10% for bending room, and use the harness math from the app's build sheets: two-point straps for light pieces, an X-harness for chest armor. Rivets set with a mallet hold better than snaps under load; place the buckle so the strap's short tail hides under the armor edge.

A vambrace, worked from measurement

Forearm circumference 26 cm at the widest, plate height 16 cm, 4โ€“5 oz veg-tan. The flat pattern is the circumference plus a lap: 260 mm + 20 mm overlap = a 280 ร— 160 mm blank, cut in one confident pass, skive where the edges will fold. Case it (it turns cool and dark), then wet-form over a form this shape, a 90 mm PVC pipe section is the shop stand-in for a forearm, and let it dry holding the curve. Rivet the two buckle straps (25 mm, cut from the wearer's measure plus the bending-room 10%), bevel, damp, burnish the edges glossy, dye thin, seal. A measured vambrace, one bench evening for shaping and one for finish; the hours ride the build log like every other piece.

Knife rule: leather knives are sharp enough to ignore, always cut away from the hand holding the strap, and cap the knife the second it's down.
The app helps: the app keeps the exact inputs beside every materials row โ€” โ€œ4โ€“5 oz, 280 ร— 160 mm, straps 25 mmโ€ stays on the row that produced them, so the second bracer re-runs with the second bracer's numbers. On the site the planner carries the piece as one tile through its stages, and the build log holds each bench evening's hours and spend against the deadline.
